Mandarin is one of the most difficult languages to learn but one of the most fulfilling once mastered.  Learning Mandarin can also be extremely expensive especially if you decide to have private lessons.  There are however, some good online resources to help you understand the basics.  One of the main advantages of using online resources is that you can fit it in around your schedule.  You are not restricted by the times a tutor would be available to give you  mandarin lessons, with online courses you can be practicing at 3am if that’s the time which suits you.

Mandarin lessons online can also be very interactive with use of multimedia resources to make the process of learning much more enjoyable.  It is not a simple case of reading from a text book with online courses, quite often there are videos and audios as well as quizzes to check that you are improving.

However, Mandarin lessons obtained online are no substitute for having an actual tutor who can help you with your pronunciation and tone, aspects which are incredibly difficult to grasp, especially for English native speakers.  On the other hand, it does depend on what you want to get out of learning Mandarin.  If you would like to be able to read or write it, or have a basic conversation or are just interested in having a new, interesting hobby, then online resources can be a great asset.  If you would like to develop into a fluent Mandarin speaker then it would be useful to begin with an online course to provide the basics and then progress to lessons with an actual tutor.
